Introductory Reflection
Dear Ms. Henderson,
This is where I will discuss with you my overall experience throughout my semester in English 150 MG, covering the WOVE curriculum and other things that I have learned from the class. Over the course of the semester, I have grown in many different ways. I have grown as a writer, with the way that I brainstorm, construct, and revise my papers, I have grown as a presentational speaker, with the way that I organize, create, and prepare for my presentations, I have grown as a reader, with the way that I retain and understand the material that has been given, and I have grown overall as a student, with the way that I dedicate my time to my studies and in developing relationships with my professors and peers. This class has helped me to expand as a student and as a person, but I couldn't have done it without all of the handwork and time that I have put into the class, or without the help and support from you, Ms. Henderson.
At the beginning of the semester, when I was given a writing assignment to do, I would start out the process by just going straight to my laptop and start writing. With help from you, and from my peers, I have learned that that is not the proper way, or the easiest way for that matter, to write a successful and powerful paper. I have now been starting my writing and brainstorming process with a basic outline, setting it up paragraph by paragraph, and writing down facts and topics that I want to incorporate into specific parts of my paper. I feel that this process has helped me to better organize my papers, and has also sped up the process of trying to write an "A" worthy paper without spending days on just one paragraph. This method has proven to help me succeed in my writing, because I have received an improved grade with each assignment that I have submitted for this class. That being said, I also took any and all constructed criticism from you and from my peers that I could get. Hearing people's thoughts and idea's about the drafts that I wrote helped me to develop my papers even more, and make them the best that they could be. My revising process has really depended on the feedback that I have received from you and from my classmates, and I feel that that is the best way to begin the revising process.
When preparing for a presentation in front of any number of people, I have learned that it is important to take it very seriously and put a lot of thought and effort into each aspect of my presentation. I have also learned that it is crucial to run through my planned presentation before giving it, to make sure that it is long or short enough for the allotted time that the professor is looking for. I ran into the problem of having too much information to present and not enough time to present it in both of my presentations for this class. That resulted in me becoming flustered, and not being as confident in the material that I was presenting. I did however improve my timing for my second presentation, which I did by writing down a few of the key points that I wanted to touch on in my presentation on flashcards. Despite the overlap of time that my presentations had, I received mostly positive feedback from both you and my peers for both of my presentations. My main focus of improvement that I would like to work on would be with organizing and timing my presentations out so that I fill them with the allotted time given.
At the beginning of the semester, our class was assigned many reading assignments that were to be read before each class and ready to discuss. I remember not being thrilled to have class discussions every Tuesday and Thursday about the readings that we were assigned to read, but what I came to realize was that I actually really enjoyed the class discussions for many reasons. The class discussions really helped me to express the way I felt about the readings, helped me to see different perspectives of them, and also to better understand what the author was trying to portray when writing them. I found that the class discussions also helped me to become a leader in the class, and someone who always participated in the class exercises. Having these roles for myself in the class kept me motivated and excited to read what was assigned and to go to class ready to discuss each day.
This class, English 150 MG, has truly helped me develop into a better student, and a better role-model for myself, my younger brothers, and my fellow classmates. I have learned so much from the writing exercises, the presentation and visual projects, the reading assignments, my classmates, and from you, Ms. Henderson, than I have at either of my previous colleges that I attended last year. The amount of support and motivation that I have been given and have found within myself is such an amazing feeling and an accomplishment. To be able to confidentially say that I put 100% effort into this class, and improved on every paper and presentation that I handed in, is such a rewarding feeling and I couldn't have done it without your help. I am so excited to continue my journey here at Iowa State University for the next two and a half years, and I hope that I can continue a professional relationship with you along the way. Thank you so much for all of your help and support throughout this semester Ms. Henderson.
